Bleach in the Black Water Tank and a Bullseye on my Back By andyj, on October 29th, I have been catching some flak from a rather vocal group that firmly believes bleach should never be added to the black water waste tank on a recreational vehicle which I advocated in this post. I still stand by this post and will try to explain my reasoning further. I use bleach in 3 different ways around the RV Basecamp. I use it as an algaecide in my portable gallon water tank. I put bleach in my RV black water tank to get rid of odors. Number 3 is the action causing all the hubbub. People seem to believe that bleach will devastate a septic system. Simply not true when used in moderation. And how do I know this? Regular readers know I refrain from writing about things I have not experienced or dealt with directly.

It wants to float to the top of cooler water. Cool water is heavy and wants to fall. If you have a loop that projects upwards, the cool water wants to fall down the loop while the hot water goes up. Gravity fuels the motion.

An electric water heater, on the other hand, doesn’t burn fuel and produce combustion gasses, so it doesn’t need a flue at the top. It does, however, need an electrical hookup that connects to an electrical circuit breaker in an electrical panel because it has electric heating elements inside the tank.
These are typically only very small water heaters that use a single heating element often around watts or so. The largest volt units I’ve seen out there are gallon water heaters. However, most people obviously use the higher voltage water heaters because in the real world they expect lots of hot water to be available and they don’t like it when it takes a longer time to for the unit to heat the water back up when they run out of hot water. However, I would strongly advise you to let a licensed electrician handle the wiring of ANY electric hot water heater.
For example, if you think you can just “tie in” a volt water heater to the nearest electrical outlet, you are ASKING for trouble. The only possible exception that comes to my mind is the case when the unit is so tiny that it comes with a corded plug. Even then, you better know that the outlet you use is on a circuit which is used for nothing else except maybe a simple low-wattage light or some-such minor amperage draw.
You are literally playing with fire here.

We are installing the wiring for an electric water heater circuit and we need to make sure we are using the right wire size. Wiring a Water Heater Electrical Question: We are installing a new electric water heater, in a home addition. We have a sub panel, installed by the electrician who started the project, with the breaker ready to go.
All we need to do to complete the job is to run the wire, and put in the shut-off switch near the water heater. It seems that we will need 10 AWG wire, is this correct? My questions about my Water Heater Project are: Do we just run regular 10awg wire in the ceiling, and then as we drop down the wall in the unfinished basement, we put it into PVC or metal conduit? I understand that the water heater needs a shutoff on the circuit near the heater.

Edit Answer for another 1 minute When BayAreaAC said “old water supply” – he meant “cold” water supply – typo – the water feed to the tank. Turning that off cuts of flow to the tank so will stop any tank leak – also to all hot water faucets, and also the hot tempering water that keeps the toilet tanks from “sweating” – toilets will still work, just may accumulate condensation on the outside. Water Heaters and Models Q5: Can a solar pre-heated water be used with a Noritz unit? Yes, it is possible to use our products with a solar system. How do Noritz tankless water heaters work? Noritz water heaters work on demand — they only heat water when necessary. When a hot water fixture is opened or hot water is required by an appliance, the heater will sense the demand and heat water accordingly.
Noritz tankless water heaters continuously heat the water through a heat exchanger. Instead of wasting energy and money re-heating and storing water when it is not needed, tankless water heaters provide only as much hot water as needed. What is the difference between a storage tank water heater and a tankless water heater? Tank water heaters store and heat water at all times, thus incurring higher operating costs, whereas tankless water heaters only heat water as needed. In addition, tank heaters have a limited supply of hot water and will run out of hot water while tankless heaters provide an unlimited supply of hot water — you will never run out.
Also, the size of a residential tankless heater is about the size of a carry on suitcase and can be installed virtually anywhere inside or outside. This will allow you to reclaim valuable space in your home. How much money can be saved if a Noritz tankless water heater is used in place of a storage tank?

Boat Plumbing By Don Casey Boat plumbing is a lot easier for the do-it yourselfer than plumbing at home, mainly because it doesn’t involve rigid pipes running inside solid walls. In fact, pipes are rarely used at all on boats, replaced by easier-to-handle flexible hose or tubing. Here is an overview of a typical on-board water system. Tanks Because water is heavy, tanks should be mounted low in the boat.
Where space is available, it is a relatively simple matter to add extra tanks. Rigid polyethylene tanks are available in hundreds of shapes and sizes, or you might use a flexible bladder tank–essentially a water bag. Threaded hose barbs allow for hose connections. The inlet is connected to an on-deck fill. Be sure the deck-fill has an O-ring to seal out seawater when it is closed. The vent line leads to a vent fitting high in the boat — above the tank at every expected angle of heel.
Be aware that if the vent is not also higher than the fill, it will overflow when you are filling the tank. The outlet connection leads directly to a pump or, in a multi-tank installation, to a manifold or Y-valve. Use Teflon tape or thread sealant on all threaded fittings, and don’t overtighten fittings in plastic tanks.
